2009 Nurse of the Year Tapped
5/12/2009

Nancy Wood, RN, a recovery room nurse in the PACU and 34 year tenured employee, is the 2009 recipient of the Grace Kleinfeld Award for Nursing Excellence. The award presentation was held as part of Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital's nurse appreciation week, May 4 - 9. A total of 12 members of the hospital's nursing staff were nominated for the honor. The award is named in honor of Grace Kleinfeld, RN, who served at the hospital in positions of leadership from the late 1950s to 1980. According to a 1987 Resolution of the hospital's Board of Trustees that established the award, Grace Kleinfeld was "recognized by her professional peers as possessing the characteristics highly regarded in achieving excellence as a nurse." The Resolution goes on to state that she was "a leader among leaders, a person who consistently held the respect of fellow employees and one whose judgements and opinions were highly valued." In presenting the award to Nancy Wood, COO Mike Cadoret described her as a nurse with clinical expertise and critical thinking skills which are continuously utilized for the benefit of patients. "As demand for her skills have increased, she has readily adapted and grown as a Team Leader within the preoperative as well as postoperative settings." Mike further stated that, "In her over 34 years of service, Nancy's professionalism and dedication to exceptional care of her patients, the mentoring of new team members, along with her accountability and autonomy have earned her the utmost respect of her patients, physicians and co-workers." This is the second time Nancy Wood has been tapped as the nurse of the year at Helen Ellis.
